Adelaide Marathon Course – Club Statement 28th March 2018

Over the past 6 months Event Organiser South Australian Road Runners Club (SARRC) has been meeting with the City of Adelaide, the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, and Events South Australia.

Major infrastructure upgrades in the CBD and surrounds have impacted the ability to have a state marathon course that will showcase Adelaide while also being fast and flat for runners.

SARRC has received provisional approval from the City of Adelaide for the 2018 Course and it is likely that there will be no changes made to it. The Botanic Gardens of South Australia have approved the section that runs through Botanic Park.

The course can be found here. (https://adelaidemarathon.org.au/event-info/)

2018 Commonwealth Games Course Measurer, Don Wallace made the journey to Adelaide late last month to AIMS certify the course. He mentioned that it is an improved course from 2017, and is the best we would get in the area that we have been allowed by Local and State Government. To improve the course further we would need to start shutting down sections of the CBD. Wallace also made mention that the last 12K of the 21.1K loop is the best section.

We are continuing our discussions with the relevant parties regarding the future course.

Adelaide is the ideal city with its flat terrain and temperate climate; we are working towards creating a course and event that will have the same appeal as other major capital city marathons in Australia.

SARRC needs support of the local, national and international runners to ensure the relevant parties understand the key components runners want and need in an event and course.
